The Republic of Kenya is a country in East Africa.Fossils found in East Africa suggest that Primates roamed the area more than 20 million years ago.Situated on the equator on Africa's east coast, Kenya has been discribed as the cradle of humanity.

In the Great Rift valley,palaeontologists have discovered some of earliest evidence of Man's ancestors.

In the present day Kenya, great ethnic diversity has produced a vibrant culture which is also a source of conflict.The largest tribe is Kikuyu which is 18% of total population.Luhyas are 15% followed by Luo 14% ,Kalenjin 12% ,Kamba 11% ,Kissii 7%, Ameru 6% ,Somali 3% and a host other smaller tribes consisting of 13% of the population.Europeans,Asians andArabs make up 1% of the population.
The portuguese were the first Europeans to explore Kenya.The Omani Arabs who had arrived earlier posed most direct challenge to Portuguese influence in East Africa.They besieged Portuguese fortresses lilke Fort Jesus,openly attacked naval vessels and eventually expelled the Portuguese from Kenyan and Tanzanian coasts by1730
Most historians consider that the colonial history of Kenya dates from establishment of a German protectorate over the Sultan of Zanzibar coastal possesions in 1885 followed by the arrival of The Imperial British Company in 1888.
During the early part of the twentieth century,the interior central highlands were settled by British and other European farmers,who became wealthy farming coffee and tea.
From october 1952 to December 1559,Kenya was under state of Emerency arissing from Mau mau rebellion against the British rule.The capture of Dedan Kimathi on 21 october in Nyeri signified the ultimate defeat of the Mau mau.
In 1964, Jomo Kenyatta became Kenya's first President.At Kenyatta's death in1978,Daniel arap Moi became the president.In 2002, Moi was constitutionally barred from running and Mwai Kibaki running for the opposition Rainbow coalition was elected.
Kenya is the regional hub for trade and finance in East Africa.The economy has been hampered by corruption and reliance on several primary cash crops whose prices have remained low.Other pressing challenges include high unemployment,crime and poverty.Most Kenyans live below the poverty line of $1 a day.Droughts and other natural disasters frequently put millions of people at risk.
Kenya has been leading light in the Somali and Sudanese peace talks.Kenya is also one of Africa's more politically-stable country.

The lucrative tourist industry has bounced back following the slump that followed bomb attacks in Nairobi in 1998 and Mombasa in2002.
